Playtime is an atelier building in de center of Rotterdam. 4 floors of a modernist post office from the 60s have been transformed into atelier spaces, workshop, an artist residency, a coffee place and an apartment. The building offers space for research, design and small scale production to a group of around 30 designers and artists.
The building offers shared services and promotes social contact between its tenants. At the same the building has a representative appearance which often is lacking in temporary ateliers spaces.
The building has been designed as an institution. Spaces must feel natural and offer a timeless background for the program filled in by its tenants. The concrete structural grid of the building is emphasized and other elements are designed as steel substructure. Within the design extra attention is given to the existing structure to guarantee a seamless transition from old to new.
↪ How can we rethink traditional city planning and respond to the urgencies of the continuously evolving urban environment?
