The modernisation of the Zvonarka Central Bus Terminal is Chybik+Kristof Architects’ self-initiated project that reaffirms their longstanding engagement for social change. The new design revisits the station’s defining role in the city’s social fabric and preserves its Brutalist essence. The project involved transforming the existing structure while addressing the need to rethink a decaying public space into a functional entity adapted to evolving social needs.
Transparency is at the root of the new design. Paying homage to its original architect Radúz Russ, they proudly expose the station’s characteristically raw Brutalist elements – a steel supporting frame and concrete roof – contrasting the irregularity with an organic wave that mirrors the seamless flow of vehicles and passengers.
A new hall welcomes the passengers and navigates them to the bus terminal. The project turned the decaying terminal into functional hub. The project is a great impulse for the city and region too, bringing a desirable social change to the whole area.
↪ How can we rethink traditional city planning and respond to the urgencies of the continuously evolving urban environment?
